The Axial Corridor
Pearces stone paved spinal corridor seems to have been influenced by the published designs of Coleshill house in Wiltshire, and is unusual in an Irish context. The axial corridor divided the front of the house from the state rooms at the rear. It would have been used by the servants and many of the doors opening on to the corridor were servants or jib doors, which were not always visible on the other side. This scheme was repeated by Richard Castle at Leinster House in 1745, acknowledged to be the inspiration for the White House, so Castletown could claim to be the grandfather of the American Presidential residence.
